Students looking to start a career in computers and technology normally have no idea of which direction to consider, or even which area to build their qualifications around. As in the absence of any commercial skills in the IT industry, in what way could we understand what anyone doing a particular job actually does? Arriving at any kind of right resolution only comes through a methodical examination across many different key points:

- Which type of person you think yourself to be - what kind of jobs you find interesting, plus of course - what you definitely don't enjoy.

- What is the time-frame for the training process?

- Have you thought about salary vs job satisfaction?

- Many students don't properly consider the amount of work required to get fully certified.

- It makes sense to take in what is different for the myriad of training options.

To be honest, it's obvious that the only real way to gain help on these issues tends to be through a good talk with an advisor or professional who has experience of Information Technology (and more importantly it's commercial needs.)

Other skills which are relevant to web-designers in the commercial marketplace are an in-depth understanding of e-commerce & project-management. Another discipline - that isn't to be underestimated - is 'SEO' (Search Engine Optimisation). This concerns how to optimize website indexation on Search Engines like 'Google' & Yahoo. And behind the scenes but very crucially we have the web-server administrators and installers who ensure that everything operates efficiently. Technically these people are network administrator experts though.

Many trainers will provide a useful Job Placement Assistance program, to help you get your first job. Ultimately it isn't so complicated as you might think to find a job - as long as you've got the necessary skills and qualifications; employers in this country need your skills.

Nevertheless, don't procrastinate and wait until you've qualified before polishing up your CV. As soon as you start studying, enter details of your study programme and tell people about it! It's not uncommon to find that junior support jobs have been bagged by students who're still on their course and have yet to take their exams. At least this will get your CV into the 'possible' pile and not the 'no' pile. Most often, an independent and specialised local recruitment consultant or service (who will get paid commission to place you) will be more pro-active than a recruitment division from a training organisation. In addition, they will no doubt be familiar with the area and local employers better.

Do make sure you don't invest a great deal of time on your training course, and then just stop and leave it up to everyone else to find you a job. Get off your backside and get on with the job. Put the same energy and enthusiasm into securing your new role as it took to pass the exams.
